Fix Google Chat not Working

Real-time collaborative chat, as represented by programmes like Slack, has been a popular way for colleagues and friends to interact, particularly since early 2020, when so many of us began working from home. In mid-2021, Google appears to have taken notice of this and decided to compete with Slack by incorporating two features from its corporate Workplace software suite — Chat and Spaces (formerly named Rooms) — into its basic Gmail interface.

Google Chat allows you to hold informal or formal conversation sessions with individuals and groups of friends. The former can be done between two people or among multiple people in what Google refers to as a group conversation. The latter is accomplished through a distinct location that Google currently maintains.

What's the distinction? According to Google, chat is just a method for two or more people to converse without any formality — for example, if you wanted to quickly discuss where you were meeting for lunch, you'd start a group conversation among your pals. When the chat is over, it is finished, and it will be removed within five days (if you use a personal account rather than a Workspace account).

A space, on the other hand, is for longer-term discussions. Each area has its own identity, is available for people to leave and rejoin, sends notifications, and allows users to share files. It's useful for work projects, party planning, or any other activity in which you want to keep the dialogue running for days, weeks, or months.

If this seems useful to you, the first step is to enable Google Chat for your Gmail account. At the moment, you must do it individually on your browser and on your mobile device.

Instead of the Meet and Hangouts boxes on the left side of your Gmail screen, you'll now see a Chat box, a Spaces box, and a Meet box. Any contacts with whom you previously communicated via Hangouts will appear in the new Chat box; click on their names, and a little pop-up window in the lower left will display those past conversations. (Remember that if you previously blocked someone on Chat, the blocking will not be carried over to Chat.)

Also, take note of the option to the right of the search box, which allows you to select whether you want to be active, away, or undisturbed; you may also fill in your own status.
